How to Use Bioethanol Fuel Safely

Clean, Efficient & Easy to Use

Le Feu Fires Canada · Guide

Bioethanol fuel makes it possible to enjoy real flames without smoke, soot, or gas lines. But to make the most of your fireplace, proper fueling and maintenance are essential. This guide explains how to handle, fill, and store bioethanol fuel safely—ensuring a warm, worry-free experience every time you light your Le Feu fireplace.

What is bioethanol fuel?

Bioethanol is a renewable energy source made from fermented plant materials such as corn or sugarcane. It’s a clean-burning liquid that produces only water vapour and a small amount of CO₂ when burned—similar to human breathing. Unlike wood or gas, it requires no chimney or ventilation, making it perfect for modern homes and condos.

  • Renewable, CO₂-neutral energy made from plants
  • Produces real flames and radiant warmth
  • No smoke, soot, or ash
  • Ideal for flueless, ventless fireplaces like Le Feu

How to fill your burner

Always fill your fireplace burner with care to prevent spills or overfilling. Make sure the burner is completely cool before adding fuel. Follow these steps for safe refueling:

  1. Wait at least 30 minutes after extinguishing the flame to allow the burner to cool.
  2. Use a clean funnel or pour directly from the bottle, avoiding contact with surfaces.
  3. Fill the burner no more than two-thirds full—never to the brim.
  4. Wipe up any spills immediately with a dry cloth before lighting.
Patience equals safety—always refuel a completely cool burner and never while the flame is still active.

Lighting and extinguishing the flame

Lighting your Le Feu fireplace is simple and safe when you follow proper procedure. Use long fireplace lighters or safety matches to ignite the burner from a safe distance.

  • Light the flame from one edge of the burner to avoid sudden ignition.
  • Allow the flame to stabilize for a few minutes—it will reach full brightness naturally.
  • To extinguish, use the provided damper lid or snuffer to cut off oxygen.
  • Never blow out the flame or cover the burner with cloth or metal objects.

Safe storage and handling

Bioethanol is flammable and must be handled with care. Always store your fuel in its original container, tightly closed and upright, in a cool, dry, and ventilated area. Keep it out of reach of children, pets, and away from direct sunlight or heat sources.

  • Store in a secure place below 40°C (104°F)
  • Never store near stoves, radiators, or fireplaces
  • Do not pour into unlabelled or non-approved containers
  • Keep fuel at least 1 metre away from any open flame when refilling

Cleaning and maintenance

Le Feu fireplaces require minimal maintenance to stay beautiful and efficient. After each use, wait for the burner to cool before cleaning. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive pads.

  1. Clean the dome with a damp, lint-free cloth when cool.
  2. Wipe the burner with a soft cotton cloth lightly moistened with bioethanol.
  3. Ensure the burner is completely dry before refilling.
  4. Inspect the SafeBurn insert periodically for wear or debris.
