Install a Ceiling Fireplace
Safe & Simple
A ceiling-mounted bioethanol fireplace, like the Le Feu Sky Dome, creates a floating centerpiece with real flames and Scandinavian minimalism — all without a chimney or gas connection. This guide covers planning, ceiling structure requirements, tools, pole installation, height adjustment, fueling, and safety checks. Always follow your specific model manual and local regulations.
Plan: ceiling structure, clearances & placement
The Sky Dome hangs from a ceiling-mounted pole system available in multiple lengths, allowing perfect placement in open living spaces, vaulted ceilings, or modern lofts. All Le Feu bioethanol fireplaces are certified to ANSI/CAN/UL/ULC 1370 for indoor use when properly installed.
- Load-bearing ceiling: The ceiling plate must be fixed into solid structural material such as ceiling joists, beams, or concrete. Do not mount into drywall alone.
- Clearances: Follow manual recommendations for top/side clearances. Keep curtains, light fixtures, and décor away from the flame zone.
- Height: The center of the dome typically sits 70–100 cm above the floor, depending on ceiling height and viewing preferences. Pole extensions are available if your ceiling is higher than standard.
- Room placement: Avoid strong drafts, ceiling fans, or tight alcoves. Choose an area with normal ventilation.
- Ventilation & utilities: No chimney, power, or gas connections are required. Bioethanol provides clean, flueless operation.
Tools & hardware
Ceiling-mounting hardware varies by ceiling construction. Use appropriate fasteners for wood joists or concrete.
Essential tools
- Drill/driver with wood or masonry bits
- Stud finder or structure locator
- Level and measuring tape
- Pencil and masking tape
- Screwdriver or socket set
- Stepladder
- Vacuum and safety glasses
Hardware (choose by ceiling type)
- Heavy-duty wood screws for joists
- Concrete anchors and screws for solid ceilings
- Washers if recommended
- Optional: additional Sky Pole extensions
Included with your Sky Dome
- Ceiling plate (mounting base)
- Primary Sky Pole section
- Dome fireplace body
- Bioethanol burner with SafeBurn insert
- Damper tool & user manual
Install the ceiling plate & pole (step-by-step)
- Identify structure. Use a stud finder to locate joists or beams. Mark the center point for the ceiling plate.
- Mark drill points. Hold the ceiling plate flush overhead and mark screw hole positions using a level.
- Drill pilot holes. Use the correct bit for your ceiling type. Vacuum dust for clean anchoring.
- Fix the ceiling plate. Drive screws securely into structural wood or anchors. Re-check alignment before tightening fully.
- Attach the Sky Pole. Screw the first pole segment into the ceiling plate. For tall ceilings, add additional pole sections by threading them together.
- Stability check. Gently pull downward on the pole to ensure a solid, wobble-free installation.
A secure ceiling plate and properly anchored pole are essential. If you’re unsure about ceiling structure, consult a qualified installer.
Attach the dome & burner
Once the pole is set, you can mount the Sky Dome. The dome rotates, allowing you to direct the ambience and warmth wherever you prefer.
- Have a second person assist while lifting the dome to the pole connection point.
- Secure the attachment ring or fitting according to your model instructions.
- Insert the SafeBurn burner into its cradle and confirm it is level.
- Ensure all fasteners are tightened and that the dome rotates smoothly.
- Maintain required clearances below and around the flame window.
Fueling, first burn & safety checks
Use only high-quality, approved bioethanol fuel. Typical Sky Dome output ranges from 2.0–3.0 kWh with 2–3 hours of burn time per litre, depending on ventilation and damper settings.
First ignition
- Confirm the burner is fully cool before filling.
- Open the burner and pour fuel using a funnel up to the maximum level.
- Wipe any spills immediately.
- Ignite using a long safety lighter.
- Observe flame stability and ventilation for several minutes.
Safety checks
- Ensure normal room ventilation.
- Keep the area free of soft furnishings and objects underneath the dome.
- Use the damper tool to extinguish the flame.
- Wait at least 30 minutes before refueling.
- Never move or adjust the fireplace while lit or warm.
Care & maintenance
Ceiling fireplaces require minimal maintenance. A few simple habits keep your Sky Dome performing at its best.
- Clean the dome with a soft, damp cloth once cool.
- Wipe the burner using a cloth lightly moistened with bioethanol.
- Inspect the ceiling plate and pole connections periodically.
- Store fuel upright and away from heat sources.
